3 Easy Photoshop Text Effects
So have you ever wondered how to place text behind an object? In this video, I’m gonna show you three easy Photoshop text effects. Let’s get started.
Table of Contents
Text Behind Object Photoshop Text Effect
In this example, we’re gonna do the text effect it’s pretty popular, where you can out the text behind the model. I’m going to hit T for the text tool, click on my image, I’m gonna type in the word fashion in all caps. I’m going to click on my check mark, use my move tool and I wanna make this text a little bit bigger. So back to my text tool and increase this just a little bit, like that. But now I wanna kinda get this centered. I’m going to hit Command + A, to select the entire canvas. With the move tool selected, I can come up here to the align horizontal center, click that, and also align vertical center. And so that just centered it right in the middle. And if I hold shift and use my move tool, I can move it up and it’s constrained, and I can put it there, wherever I like, and I can hit Command + D to de-select that. I’m gonna turn off this text layer, select the background layer. In order to make a selection around the subject I’m going to use the object selection tool and just draw a rectangle around the model and this will do a pretty good job. There’s a couple areas here. If I hit Alt option and draw another rectangle right here, that area is selected, there’s a smaller area right here, I’m gonna hit Alt option. You see it turns into a minus sign and that area got selected too. So it did a pretty good job.
I’m going to come down here to the create new group icon with a selection still active and I’m going to create a layer mask on this group. So I’m coming down here to create new layer mask, and I’m gonna turn back on my text. And now I put the text layer in the group. So after I put the text layer in the group, you can see that I don’t see all the text. If I click on the layer mask and say Command + I, I’m inverting that. So I just inverted that layer mask. And now the text is behind. If I wanna add more text, use my text tool. Let’s say I wanna type in magazine. Click my check mark, V for the move tool in a big and if I double-click on my text layer, I can make that text a little bit smaller. Click on the check mark, and the idea is that because I have a group here and I added another text layer since that text layer is in that group that has the layer mask on it, that text is also behind the mark. So I can keep on adding other layers of anything else I want in that group and it’ll go behind the model. Another Photoshop text effect.
See Through Cutout Photoshop Text Effect
So another popular text effect is the see-through cutout. Let’s do this on this image of the beach here. So again, T for the horizontal text tool. I’m going to type in the word seashells. Okay, and hit my check mark, V for the move tool ’cause I’m gonna moved this down a little bit. I wanna create a rectangle. If you don’t see the rectangle tool right away, you can come over here and hit the command key and this menu drops down, and you can bind the rectangle tool and highlight it. So I’m gonna draw this rectangle right here and I want the color of this rectangle to be white and no stroke. A completely white rectangle. Notice I created the text and rectangle separately.
So now I’m going to move my text onto my rectangle and let’s adjust this rectangle a little bit. I’ll select my rectangle layer and hit Command + T and I’m gonna move these in just a little bit. Make this rectangle a little bit smaller. Click my check mark up there. And now if I click on my text layer and hit command and click on it, that makes a selection out of the letters. And now with that selection active, I highlight my shape layer and come up here to Layer, Layer Mask, Hide Selection. And now I can turn off my text layer ’cause I don’t need it or I can delete it, and there you go. The background shows through and can move around anywhere I like in another simple photoshop text effect.
How To Make A Reflection Photoshop Text Effect
So we’re gonna create a reflection type of effect. So I come up here to File, New, and I’m gonna create a blank document. Make sure that is white and it’s 1280 by 720, just the choice that I made. And say, Create. And now I’m gonna come over here and click on my horizontal type tool, and I’m gonna type the word REFLECTION, all caps. And come up here and click the check mark. Use my move tool, V, for the move tool. And if I double-click on it, I’m going to make it a little bit bigger. Come up here to the top and increase the font, and move it over just a little bit. I think I want the font just a little bit bigger.
Now I’m gonna duplicate that text layer, Command or Control + J. Now that I duplicated that layer, I wanna come up here to edit, transform that vertical and bring it down. Just below that layer. I wanna make sure that my colors are black and white. Over here hit D and my foreground color is black, my background color is set to white. Come up here to my gradient tool, choose foreground to background and make sure that I’m using the linear gradient. And so what I wanna do on the layer that I had flipped vertically, I wanna create a layer mask. Click on that layer mask, and now click Shift and use my gradient tool, but something like that. Another simple Photoshop text effect.
Another Photoshop Text Effect
So let’s create another blank document. File, New, and I’m gonna choose this custom 1280 by 720 and a white background, and say, Create. Come up here to the text tool, which is a T, select the horizontal type tool. I’m going to click and type in the word SHINING in all caps. Click on my checkmark, V for the move tool ’cause I wanna move this over a little bit. I’m going to double-click on my text and come up here to the top, make it bigger. I wanna change the color, so I’ll click right there at the top on the color picker. Let’s make it green and say, OK, click on my checkmark. I’m going to duplicate that text layer twice. Control + J, Control + J. And I’m going to select both those layers that I just duplicated and say Command + E which is gonna merge those two layers together. With the merged layer selected, I’m gonna come up here to Filter, Blur and Radial Blur. And my settings are going to be about 100, click on zoom and quality, good, and say, OK. And I’m gonna do that a second time. I’m gonna come up here to Filter, Blur, Radial Blur and say, OK, again. So I’ve done that step twice. And now I’m gonna select the original text layer and double-click.
I’m going to under Styles click on Bevel and Emboss, and Contour. And be sure I click in there so that I see my layer style parameters for this layer style. I’m gonna use these settings I had already put in here, bevel, smooth, depth is about 100, size, three, soften, zero, say, OK. So now we have our layer style applied to the original text layer. And I’m gonna select the background layer now and add a gradient bill adjustment layer. And I’m gonna make sure that I have chosen foreground and background, a radial gradient. And put the scale up to something like 1,000, and say, OK. And there you go, another easy photoshop text effect. Now to the question of the day, which of these text effects did you find useful?
