Extend Images in Photoshop 3 Ways.

METHOD 1: USING CONTENT-AWARE FILL

One of the methods that has been in photoshop for sometime how is Content-Aware Fill.

This tool analyzes the surrounding pixels and reconstructs new areas based on what it sees, blending seamlessly with the existing scene.

  1. Use the Marque tool to select a area you want to expand.
  2.  Go up to the Edit menu and Select Content-Aware Fill.
  3. A new window will now appear, showing you a preview of the edited image. You can fine-tune the fill according to your preferences by adjusting the sampling area, changing the output layer, and more. Once you’re satisfied, click on OK.

METHOD 2: USING GENERATIVE EXPAND

This tool analyzes your entire image and intelligently extends the canvas based on its understanding of the scene’s textures, patterns, and lighting.

Step 1: Select the Crop tool from the left sidebar. Alternatively, you can press the C key on your keyboard. This should open the crop window.

Step 2: Now, select the frame from the edges and expand the canvas as per your liking. Then, on the Contextual taskbar, select ‘Generative Expand’.

Step 3: Here, enter a specific prompt and use AI to add those elements to the image. However, if you wish to follow the pattern or let AI spray its magic, leave the prompt section empty and click on Generate.

Step 4: And that’s it. Based on your image, Photoshop will generate and expand the background. It will give you three options, which you can select from the Contextual taskbar or Properties panel.

Step 5: If you’re unhappy with the results, click on the Generate option again to ask Photoshop to create new results. Alternatively, you can add custom prompts to add more elements to the image.

METHOD 3: USE PHOTOSHOPs GENERATIVE FILL TO EXPAND IMAGES

Essentially, both Generative Expand and Generate Fill use the same technology to expand your images. However, the way they differ is that Generative Expand works best when used on a background image. As for Generative Fill, it comes in handy if you’re working with multiple layers or have a predefined canvas on which you fill the area using AI.
